"Amateur theatre at its best"

ABOUT US

The Society has enjoyed over 50 years of successful operation. Its venue is the Anglican Church Hall of St Luke's at Ekibin Rd East, opposite the junction of Sexton St, Annerley (or Tarragindi.)

Auditions are not held. Instead, we present rehearsed and staged play-readings over a particular weekend where the potential of an aspiring member can be assessed. Four major plays (comedies being the most popular choice) are presented each year and new members who have shown promise are given roles along with the main established actors.

Guest directors are invited into the yearly program to keep the standard high and we attract good audiences. Each major play season runs for 8 performances including 2 matinees.

From profits, exceedingly generous donations are directed to a long list of charities, including World Vision, Smith Family Sponsorship and local and overseas charities.

The hall has been set up as a theatre venue that attracts other fund-raisers who benefit from our discount offers for Block Bookings of 20+. Parking is accessible both in the grounds and nearby streets. The hall is a 7 minute drive from the City Centre, a phone is installed for patrons' use and buses pass the door.

New members are encouraged to offer to be involved in Front of House work (ushering, selling at our charity stall etc.) The group is ecumenical and friendly, with anyone over 17 years of age involved with the many aspects of theatre. Our activities are geared to presenting a top quality family entertainment at an extremely reasonable price. It is not compulsory to be a financial Society member to be involved.

"Recorded History - St. Luke's Theatre Society Ekibin 1958 to 2000"

Edited by Janet Moody OAM as a record of the evolvement of this local amateur theatre from its beginnings with a dozen Foundation members to a financially, theatrically and socially successful society over these years until the St. Luke's Church hall became a community centre for many other tennants.

This truly remarkable record, complete with over a hundred colour pictures of plays, sets, building extensions etc. as well as a listing of charity donations, makes facinating reading. The publication may be accessed at the Oxley Library.

Mrs Janet Moody OAM, who was instrumental in establishing the Society and guiding it through the years.
Mr Barry Kratzke, the present Society President.
Every year we sponsor an overseas child through World Vision. We are currently sponsoring Bunkit Taptrai in Thailand.
